AI is rapidly shaping how people access and interpret health information - through chatbots providing health information to AI applications for mass public health messaging. At the same time, public health leaders lack the technical literacy to effectively assess the risks and benefits of AI integration. This interactive workshop seeks to build foundational AI literacy for public health advocates, and to equip participants with practical tools to evaluate AI-generated health information, communicate about AI-related risks and opportunities, and to engage in advocacy conversations about AI governance in public health.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Evaluate AI-powered health information tools using a public health communication and advocacy framework.
- Identify strategies to advocate for transparency, accountability, and equity in AI-enabled health communication systems.

Ali Durran JD, MPH is the Manager, Policy Initiatives at the University of Washington Center for an Informed Public (CIP). She previously worked at Georgetown University's O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, where she was a legal associate developing evidence-based policy solutions across issue areas in health law. Her earlier work focused on creative legal and policy approaches to pandemic preparedness and response, health system reform, and reproductive rights.
At the CIP, Ali's primary focus is research-to-policy translation, helping turn the Center's research into policy solutions that strengthen our information systems and build public trust. Ali holds an M.P.H. from Yale University, a J.D. from the University of Toronto, and a B.A. from the University of British Columbia.
Rachel E. Moran, Ph.D
Senior Research Scientist

Rachel E. Moran Ph.D (she/her) is a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington’s Information School. Moran received her doctoral degree in 2020 from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. Much of her work at the Center for an Informed Public examines the spread and impact of health misinformation in online and offline contexts. She has written extensively on the role of trust and distrust in public health communication, and the centrality of rebuilding trust in scientific institutions to disrupt the demand for, and saliency of, health misinformation. Moran also holds a BA and an MA in Social and Political Science from Cambridge University and an MA in Political Communications from Goldsmiths College, University of London.
