This webinar challenges participants to take an anti-racist approach to health communication. It will inform participants how to develop culturally appropriate health messages using the PEN-3 culture model (Airhihenbuwa, 1990).
Following the completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the use and impact of social media amongst historically oppressed communities.
- Apply the Public Health Critical Race Praxis (PHCRP) (Ford & Airhihenbuwa, 2010), the PEN-3 Cultural Model (Airhihenbuwa, 1990), to Health Communication research, education, and anti-racist training.

Marline D. Edmond is a first-generation Haitian- American professional with 10 combined years of expertise in public health, community engagement, partnership, and stakeholder management. She is a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) and Howard University Culture, Communication, and Media PhD student with a focus in Health Communication. She is an active member and NJ Chapter Delegate of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and NJ Ambassador for Black Ladies in Public Health (BLiPH). She is passionate about improving the health/racial disparities, health equity, and health literacy in the Haitian communities she serves.
Tyra Montour, MPH (Moderator)

Tyra is a Graduate Research Assistant in the Community Health Education and Systems Science Lab and a health education PhD student in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University. Tyra holds a BA in Communications and New Media from Gardner-Webb University and a Master of Public Health from Morehouse School of Medicine. Her research interests are focused on health communications, telehealth, and socio-economic factors that influence the health literacy, knowledge, and awareness in vulnerable or immigrant populations. She is also interested in mental health in Haitian communities and better understanding health behaviors among individuals and within those communities. Tyra is active in Eta Sigma Gamma and most recently selected as a Collegiate Champion in SOPHE's Collegiate Champions Program.
