GOAL:

Provide a virtual 16-hr. writing workshop for selected DNPAO recipients that will result in a penultimate manuscript ready for submission to a journal.  Manuscripts shall focus on innovative practices, implementation, adaptation, and evaluation of CDC DNPAO’s SPAN, REACH, HOP, BRIC, and SPINE programs to advance nutrition and physical activity strategies among priority populations in various settings.

LEARNING OUTCOME:

Participants will draft a journal manuscript, suitable for the submission and peer review. Participants will use SOPHE’s Health Promotion Practice (HPP) journal as a reference for the development of their manuscript.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the type of articles they plan to submit and how it will contribute to the literature.
  2. Describe journal requirements using HPP as an example.
  3. Understand the differences between various types of journal articles (i.e., research brief, full-length article, longer implementation article) and the reviewer criteria.
  4. Draft an outline for their manuscript.
  5. Describe the steps in responding effectively to reviewers' comments.
  6. Develop a manuscript ready for submission including the following sections:  background literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and implications for the field.

PARTICIPANTS:

All registrants must be affiliated with the funded DNPA recipient institution and submit a detailed sufficient outline and abstract with their application for the workshop. Attendance is required at all sessions.  It is anticipated there will be a maximum of 8 writing teams of 2-3 persons each.

WORKSHOP DATES/FORMAT:

Time Commitment/Dates/Format:  Eight (8) weeks: Tuesdays, May 9, 2023, to July 11, 2023, 12:00 – 4:00 pm ET (no webinar activity the week of July 4th and May 30th)

Participants will be involved in workshops via Zoom virtual meetings.  Each session will be approximately 4 hours long.  Teams will discuss key concepts learned and have time to work as a team with subject matter experts (SMEs) on their manuscripts.   The workshop will alternate with presentations by faculty including breaks to work on their manuscript with their SME coach (4 sessions) followed by a "down" week (4 sessions) where participants will apply the learned concepts and spend dedicated time working on their manuscripts.
